How to Determine Vocal Pitch

Vocal pitch is determined by the rate of vibrations created by the vocal folds. Faster rates means higher pitches, while slower rates form deeper pitches. It is difficult, if not impossible, to accurately hear your own pitch, and not everyone knows an expert in vocal pitch -- someone who can professionally evaluate your range. Singing off pitch is embarrassing to a professional singer. Fortunately, technology can help you find out your voice range in real time.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a voice pitch program onto your computer. Programs like Pitch Perfect can recognize the pitch of a spoken or sung word, showing you what pitch is coming out of you as it travels into your computer.

    • 2

Start up the program and plug in your microphone into your computer. Eliminate all background noise like extraneous music, speech and outside noise to the extent you can. Select a new track.

    • 3

Press record and speak or sing into the microphone. The sound will be recorded in spikes on the track, showing volume and pitch. Click stop when you're done recording and then review the recording to see where your voice hit regarding pitch. Once you know that, you can work on altering the pitch of your voice and practicing with other varieties of sound.
