DIY OTA Antenna

Making your own antenna for picking up digital over-the-air broadcasts from your local network stations is a fantastic project because it allows your high definition television to receive signals that in most cases are of higher quality than what you can receive through a standard coaxial cable. The project is a fairly quick weekend one that will give you substantial return on your investment. You'll enjoy the quality and the antenna will require very little if any upkeep.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric drill with assorted bits
  • Screwdrivers of assorted sizes
  • 6 wire clothes hangers
  • Wood cut to 3 by 20 by 3/4-inches
  • 10 3/4-inch wood screws
  • 10 washers to fit the screws
  • 75 ohm transformer with coaxial cable
  • Wire cutters

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your wire hanger in 4 places so you have two bent V-shaped pieces with 8-inch long arms. Discard the hook portion of the hanger. Bend the Vs so there is a 3-inch distance between the two ends. Repeat on three of the five remaining hangers. These will be your antenna reception arms.

    • 2

Cut the hook and twisted section off the remaining two hangers and straighten the remaining wire into long straight sections. This will be the wire you use to connect the receiver arms.

    • 3

Screw pairs of the screws and washers 1/2-inch in from the long sides of the board at the following distances from the top of your board: 2-inches; 7 3/4-inches; 10-inches; 13 1/2-inches, and 17 1/4-inches. Do not tighten the screws all the way down. This is where you will attach your wires.

    • 4

Strip any paint or coating off the hangers where they will attach to the screws so they make metal to metal contact. With a long wire, start under the top left washer, then cross over to the second right washer. Continue under the third and fourth right washers, and then go back across and under the bottom left washer. Repeat this configuration for the second wire, but reverse the sides. Then place one arm under each of the top and bottom two washers on each side, leaving the center ones alone, with the arms pointing out. Screw the 8 washers down snugly with the arms underneath. Do not tighten so much that the wires bend.

    • 5

Attach the transformer to the two center screws. Screw down the washers to hold it in place.
