How to Install an In-Wall Fish Tank

Installing an in-wall mounted aquarium is similar to installing a flat screen television that is recessed within a wall. You can install an aquarium that is flush-mounted to the wall or include an overhang. This requires determining which of your walls to display the aquarium. You can then begin the process of preparing the wall and installing the aquarium.

  • Jigsaw
  • Circular saw

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the aquarium on the wall with the tape measure and add two inches to the measurement.

    • 2

Mark each corner with the pencil. Position the level on the marks and make a straight line to create an outline.

    • 3

Drill a hole at each corner of the outline with the power drill. Cut a hole in the drywall with the jigsaw or circular saw.

    • 4

Cut the studs at the top and bottom of the opening with the circular saw.

    • 5

Measure and cut 2-by-4 boards to the width and height of the aquarium. Place the cut pieces together to make a rectangle frame. Drive two screws at each corner where two boards meet to secure the frame.

    • 6

Place the frame inside the opening in the wall. Secure the frame to the studs with screws.

    • 7

Measure and cut pieces of 3/4-inch plywood. Secure the plywood to the sides and top of the frame with screws. Use two pieces of plywood on the bottom since it will bear the most weight.

    • 8

Set the aquarium inside the frame. Place trim pieces around the frame and secure them with finish nails, using the nail gun.
