How to Anchor a Floater Decoy

Duck and goose hunting is a pastime enjoyed by thousands of people annually. Duck and goose decoys (also referred to as floater decoys) are artificial decoys that are set out on the water by hunters to attract other water fowl to the area. Before setting a decoy, hunters should have a way to weigh the decoy down so it does not drift away and get lost. A simple way to weigh down a duck decoy is to attach a J-anchor to the decoy itself.

Things You'll Need

  • Nylon chord
  • J-anchor (8-ounce)

Instructions

    • 1

Screw one end of the snap swivel into the front section of the keel on the bottom of the decoy. The keel is a rudderlike piece that resembles an ice-skating blade. It is used to balance the decoy as it floats in the water.

    • 2

Tie one end of the nylon cord to the looped end of the snap swivel and knot it.

    • 3

Tie the other end of the nylon cord to the J-anchor.

    • 4

Place the decoy on the body of water that will be hunted and allow the cord and anchor to fall and slip to the bottom. Pull the cord, anchor and decoy out of the water when finished.
