Things You'll Need
Instructions
Pour three to four inches of Aragamax fine sand on the floor of your dry tank. This thick layer of sand will provide a crucial low oxygen zone at the base of the tank necessary for tank filtration, clearing the water of fish fecal matter and other organic waste.
Pour one to two inches of Sea Flor coarse sand over the fine sand. This sand is heavy enough to hold the fine sand down while still providing a good surface for sand-loving sea critters like Cucumber snails and Hermit crabs to forage organic material.
Nestle an initial layer of coral into the sand bed, working in rows, from the front to the back of the tank. Keep the coral from touching the tank walls to ensure water flows freely around all the coral structures.
Stack a second layer of coral on the base, ensuring to provide lots of open spaces for water to flow and fish to swim. A side view of the tank should show the coral sloping upwards at roughly a 45 degree angle from the front to the back of the tank. Again, avoid touching the coral to any walls of the tank.
Pour water into the tank, over the coral, filling the tank to capacity. Avoid pouring water directly onto the sand, which will wash the sand away from that section. Once the tank is filled, adjust any coral that is unstable, to ensure the coral does not fall off its perch.
