How to Make a Target for Compact Bows

Manufactured 3-D targets provide archers with the most realistic practice medium. However, because arrows must be pulled from the target unlike bullets, chunks of the target's core material are permanently destroyed. Subsequently, the target, which costs $50 to $400 depending on size and model, must be replaced frequently. A low-cost alternative is to make your own compact bow target and core from household supplies like carpet and plastic bags that can be replaced with little or no cost.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic container with lid
  • Plastic bags
  • Duct tape
  • Scrap carpet strips
  • Knife

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out the center of the lid with a knife, leaving 1 to 2 inches. This will be your target parameter, where the arrows will enter and be stopped by the core material.

    • 2

Cut strips of scrap carpet with a knife, to the dimensions of the bottom of the plastic container. Place three to five layers at the base of the container. This will stop all arrows from penetrating the back of the target.

    • 3

Bunch several plastic bags together with duct tape. Make several bushels of these bags and stuff them into the plastic container until they reach its top. Press the lid onto the container and set the target on its side. You're now ready to commence shooting at your DIY compact bow target.
