How to Determine if It's a Solid, Liquid, or Gas Through the Density Value

The calculation for density is mass/volume. This is used to determine the density for a liquid, a solid or a gas. However, the volume and weight used for the calculation will vary depending on the substance that you are referencing. You can determine a solid, liquid or gas by the density value by first learning the equations that are used to calculate the density of each substance.

Instructions

    • 1

Write out the calculation used to determine the density of a liquid. This is expressed as d = g/mL or d = grams/milliliters. A density value of g/mL indicates a liquid.

    • 2

Write out the calculation used to determine the density of a solid. This is expressed as d = g/cm3 or d = grams/cubic centimeters. A density value of g/cm3 indicates a solid.

    • 3

Write out the calculation used to determine the density of a gas. This is expressed as d = g mol/L mol or d = mass of one mole of gas/molar volume. The density value of a gas is indicated by kg/m3 or g/L.
