How to Use Salmon Stalker Floats

The best place to catch salmon with a salmon stalker float is in slow-moving fresh water between 6 and 12 feet deep. Choose a stream with water that flows about walking speed, or a little faster than walking speed. Catch the salmon during breeding season for best results. Salmon typically breed in the fall or early winter. Use a salmon stalker float to attract the salmon to the line where you attached a piece of tasty bait, such as large insects or small prawns.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a 7-foot fishing rod and a spinning reel when fishing for salmon.

    • 2

Hook the fishing line to the rod and reel. Tie the salmon stalker to the end of the fishing line, leaving a 5- to 9-foot piece of line dangling beyond the float. How long you make this line depends on the depth of the water. You want the hook to be about 1 to 3 feet above the bottom of the stream.

    • 3

Tie the circle hook to the end of the fishing line. Attach small prawns or large insects to the line.

    • 4

Cast the line into the water and wait for the salmon to bite. Salmon attack the line viciously, so be prepared to pull hard on the line to reel the fish in.

    • 5

Allow a small amount of line back out, for slack, then jerk the fish in again. Continue to reel the line in slowly, jerking it every now and then to keep a tight hook on the fish.
