How to Make DIY Waterproof Suits for Your Cameras

Capturing images of exotic fish, coral reefs or even your friends and family underwater is often impossible without purchasing special housing for your camera or using a store-bought waterproof device. However, using common plastic items, you can create your own waterproof suit that will allow you to use your favorite camera in swimming pools, lakes or the ocean. Underwater photos can create unique portraits of loved ones or help you record the sights you find while diving.

Things You'll Need

  • Large sheet of flexible urethane or 2 clear, unlubricated condoms
  • Clothes iron
  • Aluminum foil
  • Cardboard ring (optional)
  • Water-soluble antacids
  • Silica gel packet
  • Underwater glue

Instructions

  1. Using Urethane

    • 1

Fold your large sheet of urethane in half and use an iron to melt the sheets together with a piece of aluminum between the iron and urethane to prevent them from sticking. This should be done in a well-ventilated area. The remaining urethane sheet should be able to create a bag around your camera.

    • 2

Wrap the urethane around your camera. Place the lens of the camera in the center, then pull the rest of the sheet up so the camera is loosely encased. Before sealing the bag, ensure your camera has fresh batteries or is fully charged.

    • 3

Lay the urethane sheet so the camera is right side up with the opening behind it. Place two water soluble antacids and a silica gel packet right behind your camera and then remove as much excess air as you can by squeezing it out. Using the iron and aluminum foil as a barrier, heat the urethane edges together about four inches behind the camera, creating a sealed bag.

    • 4

Test the bag in your bathtub. The antacids will begin to fizz if there is a leak.

    Using Condoms

    • 5

Place a 2-inch-tall cardboard circle around the lens of your camera if you want to use zoom or if the lens automatically pops out when you turn the camera on. You can cut a paper towel tube for this.

    • 6

Place the silica gel packet next to the lens, securing it with a piece of tape if you desire. This will absorb moisture or condensation to prevent it from damaging the camera. Make sure your lens is clean and the batteries are charged.

    • 7

Wrap the camera in the first condom. Tie a knot at the end and seal it with underwater glue. Repeat this step, starting from the opposite side. Tie and seal with glue.
