How to Make a DIY Color Flash From Plastic

A variety of professional photography equipment is available via photography and electronic stores, all of which is expensive and may be beyond the budget of amateurs and hobbyists. To avoid spending hundreds of dollars on a colored flash, you can create your own using thin transparent colored plastic, which is cut to size and placed over your normal flash. When the flash is used, the light is colored via the plastic over the bulb, adding unique lighting effects to your photographs.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a piece of thin colored plastic over your camera's flash. Draw a stencil in the shape of the flash onto the plastic using a marker. Draw another stencil around the first so that there is a finger's width of space between the two drawings.

    • 2

Cut the outermost drawn stencil from the sheet of plastic using a pair of sharp scissors.

    • 3

Place the plastic stencil over the flash; it should be slightly larger than the flash on all sides. Fix the plastic to the flash's body using a rubber band. Try to avoid creasing the plastic, which could result in uneven lighting in your photographs.
