DIY Camera Sling Strap

Sling straps are a relatively new innovation based on an old and simple concept. Mounting a camera, especially a heavy digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, on a swiveling point so that it can be slung securely across the body keeps it secure and accessible. There are commercially-available sling strap kits, but a few inexpensive parts from a hardware store and an old shoulder strap from a purse or laptop case are all that's needed to put one together for less than the cost of an old-fashioned neck strap.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement strap for a laptop case
  • 2 swiveling snap hooks, 3/8 inch x 1/2 inch
  • Eye bolt and nut, 1/4 inch x 2 inch
  • 1/4 inch ferrule and stop set
  • 2 or 3 rubber washers, 1 1/4 inch

Instructions

    • 1

Attach both ends of the laptop strap to the welded loop of the snap hook. Most laptop bag straps will have hooks that will snap onto the loop. If your strap doesn't have an easy way to attach the ends to the loop, you can cut off the ends of the straps, heat-seal the cut edges to prevent fraying and then stitch and/or glue the ends around the loop.

    • 2

Slide the stop from the ferrule set down over the shaft of the eyebolt. Slip two rubber washers down over the shaft so that they sit atop the stop.

    • 3

Test the fit of the mechanism by screwing the end of the eyebolt into the tripod mount at the bottom of your camera. If the stop and washers slip around on the eyebolt, add more washers until the fit is snug. If the screw won't seat fully in the socket, remove a washer so that it will screw securely in place.

Clip the snap hook onto the loop of the eye bolt. Test the fit of the strap when slung across your body and adjust the length of the laptop strap until it fits comfortably.
