Turn your camera on, press the menu button on the back of the camera and scroll to the ̶0;Exposure̶1; or ̶0;Shooting̶1; mode section. Select ̶0;Aperture̶1; from this menu and save your settings. Even the most basic digital camera gives you the choice of shooting mode.
Hold the camera in your hand and adjust the aperture to the smallest number that appears on the rear LCD screen. The smallest number will set the lens at its widest opening, which will cause the background to appear blurry.
Move closer to your subject so the camera just focuses on the subject. Lenses have a minimum focusing distance, when you position yourself with the lens at this point it will enhance a lack of focus on the background. If you are too far away from your subject, the lens may focus to its "infinity" position, causing everything to be in focus, including the background.
Hold the camera still and press the shutter release to take the picture. Review the image on the rear LCD screen and continue shooting.
