Painting on Acrylic Photographs

Photography is an art that lends itself to experimentation and manipulation. By printing photographs onto an acrylic surface, for instance, artists can then add touches of acrylic paint ̵2; realistically or not ̵2; to create a work that is halfway between a photograph and a painting. The process can take some practice, so before attempting it on your favorite picture, practice on a clear sheet of plastic to perfect your brushwork. When you are ready for the real thing, most photography shops and studios will be able to print your chosen photograph directly onto a sheet of acrylic.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the work surface with a drop cloth. Have at your disposal one or two moist cloths that can be used to fix any small mistakes when you are painting.

    • 2

Lay the acrylic photograph on the drop cloth. Make sure the room is well lit, and that there is no glare on the photograph.

    • 3

Determine what areas of the photo you want to highlight, then choose your colors. Squeeze a small amount of acrylic paint onto a palette or paper plate. Add other colors to mix with the brush until you have the desired shades..

    • 4

Select a fresh brush and begin to paint the photograph. Start in one corner or one side and work across the photograph. If you are only adding a small amount of paint in some sections for affect, complete one section at a time.

    • 5

Repeat with each section of the photograph until you have achieved the results you were looking for.
