How to Make My Own Diffused Light for a Photography Studio

Diffusers are used by photographers when they want to lessen the intensity of the light being created by their studio strobe or continuous lights. When used without a diffuser, light from these sources can often create harsh shadows behind the subject. Using a diffuser will minimize the shadows and create a softer light on the subject. Diffusers can be purchased at most photography retailers, but you can also construct one at home using PVC piping and material.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 2-foot lengths of 1-inch PVC piping.
  • 4 1-inch PVC elbow connectors.
  • 2 2-foot lengths of Velco
  • 1 1-inch PVC "T" connector
  • Hack saw
  • 1 2-foot square panel of sheer material

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the two foot lengths of PVC piping into the elbow connectors to create a square frame. Use a hack saw and cut one length in half in the middle of the section.

    • 2

Insert a PVC ̶0;T̶1; connector in this section with the open end of the connector pointing down. This is where you will place the frame onto the light stand.

    • 3

Cut the sheer material so it is slightly larger than the frame. Separate the Velcro tape and remove the protective backing from the strips. Place one strip along the top length of the PVC frame. Place the other half of the Velcro tape along the top of the sheer material. Repeat this process along the bottom of the frame and the material.

    • 4

Place the material onto the frame, securing it in place with the Velcro strips. Place the frame with the sheer material in place on top of studio light stand.

    • 5

Position the diffuser in front of the studio light. Turn on the studio light and you will see the sheer material now diffuses the light coming from the studio light.
