Night Sky
Mother Nature is impressive in many different forms, and a night sky out in the country is something to behold. If you like camping, next time try to find a spot near water. Attach a wide-angle lens to your camera, attach the camera to a tripod and position the tripod at the edge of the water. If you have a canoe or other object to place in the foreground, that will add another element to the picture. The exposure will be long, but the result image of stars will be impressive. This shot is best done on clear night when there is no moon visible.
Light Graffiti
Light graffiti or painting with light is where you use a long exposure in a dark room or late at night and use flashlights to write words. You can also combine the use of flashlights with long landscape exposures and use the lights to illuminate items in the foreground. Both methods require some practice as it is hard to meter for these types of shots.
Candles
Whether it is during the holidays or using a few candles to light a portrait, photographing light that comes from candles often produces a very soft, warm inviting light. A very simple shot is to have a person rest her head on a table, place a candle beside her and use it as your sole light source. It is a simple shot, and the results are often very impressive.
Urban Street Scape
Using a tripod, small aperture and long exposures, you will get a picture where the lights of cars create trails of light, and the small aperture causes any source of light to appear as a starburst. While the exposure times will be shorter compared to the other examples, you will still need a tripod to ensure that your pictures are sharp.
