Things You'll Need
Instructions
Choose a large cardboard box that is made of thick, sturdy cardboard and that has the bottom intact. Tape the bottom flaps of the box together so that the bottom will not come open. Tape along the seams in order to create a smooth joint. Trim off the top flaps of the box with scissors.
Measure and mark a two-inch wide frame around the edges of each side of the box. Connect all of your measurement marks with a straight line so that you have a square or rectangle on each side that is framed by a two-inch thick border. Cut out the cardboard that is within the border with scissors. You will be left with a box "skeleton" that has an enclosed bottom, a completely open top and two inches of cardboard along every edge of each side.
Cut out two-inch thick strips of poster board that are long enough to cover the borders of the box on the inside and tape or glue them into place. This will ensure that there are no bits of the cardboard's original color peeking through. Make sure to secure the edges well so that they do not show in your photographs.
Cut a piece of poster board that is almost the same width as one side of the box and about twice as long as the height of the box. This is so that it will slide into place easily and will cover the bottom without being folded.
Slide the poster board piece into place so that it reaches from the bottom front of the box to the rear top of the box and creates a smooth curve and a flat bottom surface, much like a half-pipe for skateboarding. Trim off any excess poster board from the top.
Drape a piece of fabric over the box so that the top and sides are covered but the front is open. This is so that you can photograph items inside the box. Tape or glue the fabric to the box so that it will not slip off.
Position the desk lamp over the top of the fabric over the light box, with at least one or two inches of space from the lamp to the fabric. Adjust the distance and position as needed to get the best lighting.
Place your jewelry piece inside of the light box and position it the way you want it to look in your photograph. Take several photos from different angles with different positions to show off all sides of the jewelry.
