How to Display Your Photography on a Ledge

Displaying photography on ledges is a creative way to show off your work and give a wall a custom look. Purchasing display ledges from a retailer can be expensive and you also may not be able to find the correct size or color. If this is the case, you may want to consider constructing your own ledges for a fully customized look and cheaper alternative to the pre-made models. Although adding ledges to your walls is a major part of displaying your photographs, it is not the only step you will need to take.

Things You'll Need

  • Two 1-by-4-inch boards, 4 feet long
  • One 1-by-2-inch board, 4 feet long
  • 2-inch wood screws (12 needed)
  • Wood putty
  • Sandpaper, fine grit
  • Paint
  • Level
  • Picture frames
  • Lighting

Instructions

    • 1

Build the ledges by laying one 1-by-4-inch board on a flat working surface. Stand the second 1-by-4-inch board on its side lengthwise alongside the first 1-by-4-inch board and butt the edges together to form an "L." Screw the "L" together using four screws placed an even distance apart. Screw the 1-by-2-inch board to the opposite edge of the first 1-by-4-inch board to form a 1-inch lip. Fill in the screw heads with wood putty and allow to dry overnight. Buff the dried wood putty with sandpaper to give it a smooth finish. Wipe away any dust, then paint the ledge any color you like.

    • 2

Screw one end of the painted ledge onto the wall by screwing the back 1-by-4-inch board of the ledge to the wall of your choice. Use a level to straighten the ledge out before adding a second screw. Once level, screw the opposite end to the wall. Add two reinforcing screws that are evenly spaced. Fill the screw heads with wood putty, allow to dry, then sand and paint them. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to create the desired number of ledges.

    • 3

Frame your photographs as desired. Use the same style and size frames for a clean look or mix and match for a more eclectic appearance. Choose frames that show off each particular photograph. Arrange the frames on the ledge to your taste.

    • 4

Light your ledges and photo display by opening up nearby windows. If natural lighting is lacking, set up lamps on the ends of the ledges. Use soft lighting such as low-wattage light bulbs. Do not shine light directly onto the photographs to prevent glare from the glass frames. Fine-tune the placement of the lighting until the display is lit in a flattering manner.
