Different Types of Photography

Photography is a broad term used to generalize the art of taking photographs. There are many sub-genres of photography. Each has its own set of guidelines and unique perspective on the art. The most common types of photography can be executed using general photography equipment that is easily accessible to many people. If you are considering becoming a photographer it is wise to explore the different facets of photography to find the one that you enjoy the most.
  1. Portrait Photography

    • Portrait photography is among the most popular types of photography. Some consider it to be one of the oldest types of photography. When taking portraits the photographer is responsible for capturing not only an image of a person, but also communicating the subject̵7;s spirit and personality within the photograph. A lot of portrait photography is done in a studio with controlled lighting setups, but this is not a requirement. Portrait photography can take place anywhere people are. Portraits can be taken close-up or they may utilize full body shots. Glamor and fashion photography are both types of portrait photography.

    Photojournalism and Documentary Photography

    • Documentary and photojournalism are also common types of photography. They lend themselves to newspapers, magazines and websites that use photojournalistic images to portray events and newsworthy happenings. While photojournalism and documentary photography impose no restrictions on the subject matter so long as it tells a story, they do come with some rules. Any sort of editing or doctoring of photographs is unacceptable in the photojournalism field. The best photojournalists and documentary photographers are capable of capturing candid emotion.

    Art Photography

    • Art photography can be a very creative photographic style. Many people feel that art is based on personal opinion and therefore cannot necessarily be taught or fairly critiqued. Art photography is no exception to that fact. What makes up the subject matter in art photography is solely up to the photographer. One of the few common bonds between different photographic works of art is that the photograph should convey a messagel it is meant to provoke thought and feeling.

    Travel Photography

    • Many people love to travel and see different places. Great travel photography enables people to live vicariously through photographs of foreign lands. Travel photography requires no special equipment, which makes it easily accessible to many different people. While landscapes are common ground, travel photography can also touch on the human-interest side of travel. Travel photography is used not only to depict scenery, but also to exhibit people and their cultures. Travel photography can incorporate wildlife and animal photography, too.

    Product Photography

    • The sole purpose of product photography is to market the product as a desirable object. Product photography can be found nearly everywhere, from the Internet to roadside billboards. While product photography can, at times, be less than artistic, it can be a very technical procedure. Often times, products are photographed against a white backdrop inside of a studio. Getting the lighting right to show the product off to its fullest capability can be very tricky.
