Settings for Photographing Bands With a Canon T1i

The Canon Rebel T1i was released in 2009 and is a compact digital single lens reflex camera built around a 15.1 megapixel digital sensor. The camera will accommodate any of Canon̵7;s ̶0;EF̶1; auto focus lenses. The small body and extensive selection of lenses makes the camera a good choice for shooting concerts and bands. Using the correct settings with the Canon T1i will improve your photos.
  1. Camera RAW

    • Concerts use a variety of different lighting, and setting the camera̵7;s white balance can be tricky. By setting your Canon Rebel T1i̵7;s picture quality to RAW you will have the flexibility to adjust the white balance in post-production. There is also the added benefit of having larger files to work with during post-production editing.

    Exposure Mode

    • Turn the exposure mode dial on the top of the camera to ̶0;Tv̶1; which is the setting for shutter priority. In this setting you control the shutter speed and the camera determines the aperture needed for a correct exposure. Select a shutter speed of 1/125th of second or higher. Any lower and you run the risk of motion blur as the band members move around the stage. Depending how fast your lens is (the widest aperture) you may need to increase your ISO to 640 or 800 to be able to have that shutter speed.

    Exposure Compensation

    • This is one of the most important factors when shooting bands or concerts. If you leave the camera at an even exposure, all the pictures will appear over-exposed. By setting the Exposure Compensation to -1 or even -2, the camera will record pictures without over exposing and washing out all the dark areas of the stage. Begin at -1 and make adjustments after your first couple of shots.

    Servo Auto Focus

    • ̶0;AI Servo̶1; is the setting where the lens is constantly being adjusted to keep moving subjects in focus. This setting is another key one to good band and concert pictures. When using this feature as long as the shutter release is pressed halfway down and you are tracking the subject it will be in focus whenever you want to take the picture. There is a little more draw on the battery to run this feature so take an extra battery to the concert.
