How to Braid a Leather Duck Lanyard

Making a braided leather lanyard provides you with an essential tool while duck hunting. Different types of calls help you attract both duck and geese. Linking several calls to your lanyard at one time puts each device at your finger tips whenever you need it. A leather lanyard will also withstand inclement weather and resists tears common with nylon versions. Once it is completed, pack your lanyard in your hunting or camping bag for every outdoor adventure.

Things You'll Need

  • 18-inch 5-mm leather cords (3)
  • Leather wax
  • Cotton cloth
  • Masking tape

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out three 18-inch-long 5-mm leather cords onto a tabletop. Adjust the cords so they are side by side. Lubricate each cord with leather wax using a cotton cloth. Secure the far ends of the cords to the table with masking tape.

    • 2

Pull the cords up to a 30-degree angle. Call each cord, respectively, from left to right, "A," "B" and "C." Cord "B" begins as the center cord.

    • 3

Begin braiding 1 inch below the far ends of the cords. Cross cord "A" over cord "B." Cord "A" is now the center cord. Cross cord "C" over cord "A." Cord "C" is now the center cord. Continue braiding the left and right cords over the center cord in this fashion until 1 inch of free cord remains at the near end of the braid.

    • 4

Loop the three 1-inch cords at the near end of the braid around the rim of a half-inch metal key ring. Bond the free ends of each cord to the near-end base of the braid with permanent epoxy.

    • 5

Remove the tape from the far end of the braid. Loop the three 1-inch cords at the far end of the braid around the opposite side of the rim on the same half-inch metal key ring. Bond the free ends of each cord to the far-end base of the braid with permanent epoxy.

    • 6

Clip a second metal key ring to a single strand of cord on the left side of the lanyard. Clip a third metal key ring to a single strand of cord on the right side of the lanyard. Each ring represents points at which duck calls can clip and hang off of the lanyard.
