Mounting a Large Picture to Foam Board

For photographers, there is nothing better than seeing their work in print, and the bigger the better. While large photographic prints can be beautiful to look at and behold, if you do not mount them correctly they can wrinkle and warp from humidity in the air. Before you frame your favorite print, you should mount it to a foam board backing. Foam board can be purchased at most craft stores and is easy to work with.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of the print you want to mount on the foam board. When you are done, the foam board backing will be the exact same size as your print, but initially you will start with a piece of foam board that is slightly larger.

    • 2

Purchase the correct size foam board for your print. If your print is 24 by 36 inches, then you want a piece of foam board that is roughly half an inch larger on all sides.

    • 3

Buy some spray adhesive for photographic prints. The glue is specially made for this task and can usually be purchased at the same location where you bought the foam board.

    • 4

Lay newspaper out on the table or desk you will be working on to protect it from any overspray

    • 5

Lay the foam board on a table or desk top. Wipe the surface of the board with a dry, clean cloth to remove any dust or small debris from the surface. You want a clean and dry surface to work on.

    • 6

Place the photographic print face down on the same table if large enough. If you need to use a second table or desk, be sure to lay newspaper on it to protect from overspray.

    • 7

Apply the spray adhesive first to the foam board. Apply a thin layer evenly across the entire board. Repeat the process on the back of the picture.

    • 8

Position the picture on foam board by laying the left edge of the picture to the edge of the foam board, then slowly lay the print onto the foam board, keeping it straight.

    • 9

Run a towel over the picture to ensure the entire surface is in contact with the foam board and wait an hour for the adhesive to dry.

    • 10

Trim the excess foam board from around the picture using a utility knife. Your mounted print is now ready for framing.
