How to Get Close Ups From a Canon Powershot

Pictures that are taken a very close distance from the object being photographed are called macro pictures. While SLR cameras are typically used for macro photography, some point-and-shoot cameras will also do the trick. The Canon PowerShot line of point-and-shoot cameras feature two close-up modes called "Macro" and "Super Macro." Setting your camera to these modes, as well as using a tripod to stabilize your photos, will help you take clear close-up photos with your Canon PowerShot.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach your camera to a tripod and position it in front of the subject being photographed. Close-up photos are very easy to blur; the slightest movement of your hands can produce a blurry picture. Tripods stabilize the camera to greatly reduce blur.

Press the button with the flower icon to set your camera to Macro mode, or hold it for a few seconds to set it to Super Macro mode. If the subject you are photographing is very small, Super Macro mode is your best option.

    • 3

Zoom the camera in and point it toward the subject. On your camera's screen you will see a zoom bar; if this bar is yellow or gray, you need to zoom in more. If you are using Super Macro mode, you will not be able to zoom because the zoom setting will be automatically set to maximum zoom.

Focus on the subject by lightly pressing the shutter button; the camera will automatically focus on the subject. Press the shutter button all the way to snap the photo.
