How to Make Fringe Photography Props

When you photograph people in a studio setting, it is important to use props to enhance the photograph. These props shouldn't detract from the subject of the photograph, however. The use of a fringe photography props creates a colored, textured background to draw out your subject without taking the attention away from the subject. You can make your own fringe props with a few simple tools and materials.

Things You'll Need

  • Doily or blanket with holes, such as an afghan
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Crochet hook or pencil

Instructions

    • 1

Cut pieces of yarn in several complementary colors into sections about 4 feet long. You will need enough pieces to go around the edge of the doily or blanket. If you don't cut enough initially, you can always cut more as you need them.

    • 2

Place two pieces of the yarn together, then fold them in half so you have four strands of yarn. Don't worry about making the edges even because uneven edges add to the effect.

    • 3

Twist the folded edge of the yarn so you can fit it through one of the holes on the doily or blanket. Push the folded edge through one of the holes from the back to the front. Use the crochet hook or pencil to help push the yarn through, if needed.

    • 4

Open the loop and feed the cut ends of the yarn through the loop. Pull it tight to tie the yarn to the doily or blanket. This temporary knot lets you remove the yarn later if you no longer need the fringe prop and want the doily or blanket for other uses.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 all the way around the doily or blanket to create a full fringe photography prop. For a blanket, you might only need to do one side for the desired effect.
