How to Get Rid of a Flat Face from Scanned Slides

In today's digitally dominated world, it's refreshing to look through the dusty boxes of old 35mm film slides and take a trip down memory lane. In proper storage, these slides can retain their vibrant colors and long tonal range over many years. However, if the slides are not sealed from air, moisture and UV rays, the colors and tones can become flat and dull. This change will be most evident in skin tones as you begin scanning your slides. With any image editing software, you can compensate for loss in color and tonal range.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the image using your preferred editing software.

    • 2

Increase the contrast of the image to emphasize the darkest and lightest parts of the image. On a face, this will make features such as the eyes, mouth and nose more prominent.

    • 3

Reverse color shifting in the slide film by tweaking the image's color balance. For example, if the image has taken on a yellow cast during storage, compensate by sliding the adjustment toward blue, its complementary color. Adjust until skin tones appear natural and balanced.

    • 4

Revive any lost or muted color in the image by increasing saturation. This adjustment will make skin tone, hair and clothing color more vivid.

    • 5

Apply a sharpening filter to the image to add definition to lines, edges and other details. Adjust the intensity of the filter until the desired effect has been achieved.

    • 6

Save your image. To preserve the original scanned file, rename the image prior to saving.
