How to Make a Photo Rope

Whether you are an amateur photographer or simply have family photos that you would like to display in a unique way, a photo rope is a great option for livening up your home or office. Photo ropes are a new concept in the world of photography, and are relatively simple to make yourself. The result is an edgy, urban, modern way to display your favorite shots on a wall in your space, and the display will make a good conversation piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the wall in your space where you would like to install your photo rope. Use measuring tape to mark four evenly spaced pencil dots in a horizontal line one inch down from the top of the wall. Use your stud finder to determine if any of the four dots are on top of studs in the wall and drill screws in any that are. Drill molly bolts into any of the dots that do not fall on top of studs in the wall. Do not screw the bolts or screws all the way into the wall, but leave 1/4 inch exposed.

    • 2

Measure the distance from one screw down to where you would like your photo rope to end on your wall. Add 1 1/2 inches to the figure and cut four pieces of steel wire to that length. Measure the first wire from the top down 1 1/2 inches. Make a loop using that piece of the wire. Wrap the end of the loop around the wire using needle-nosed pliers to secure it tightly. Loop the wire over the first screw in the wall and repeat for the remaining three screws.

    • 3

Attach fishing weights to the end of each wire by stringing end of the wire through the loop on each weight. Use needle nosed pliers to make a knot in the wire around the loop and pull it tight.

    • 4

Step back and look at all four wires once you have attached all of the weights to ensure that they all hang straight down and appear even to the eye. Select the photos that you would like to display. Pick at least four or five photos for each of the four ropes. Hang photos at random intervals down each rope and secure each with a magnet in the top center, as if you were hanging a picture on a refrigerator.
