How to Make a Candid Photo

While formal portraiture has its place in the professional studio or fashion shoot, sometimes a candid portrait can capture a fleeting emotion or decisive moment more effectively. The word "candid" indicates the photograph is one that is taken spontaneously, without the knowledge of the subject. The candid technique is used by everyone from the artistic street photographer to the casual holiday snapshooter to record natural human interaction. To begin making candids, make a few simple adjustments to your shooting style.

  Grab a smaller camera before heading out. Instead of lugging around large equipment with an enormous zoom lens attached, pick up your stealthy point-and-shoot or a disposable camera. The smaller size will draw less attention from your subjects.

  Carry your camera constantly. Candid moments worth capturing can occur anywhere, from the office break room to the grocery store. As your family and friends get used to seeing your camera around, they'll be less likely to pose as you begin shooting.

  Anticipate the moment, especially when photographing groups of people. Being able to judge people's reactions will result in expressive candid shots, especially at lively events like weddings, birthday parties or office celebrations.

  Choose subjects who are engaged in an activity, such as reading, drawing or conversing with a friend or family member. People are less likely to acknowledge the camera if they are preoccupied.
