How to Make Photography Props and Backdrops

There are a number of different specialities inside the world of photography, each with its own unique requirements for equipment and accessories. Depending on the genre you want to pursue, you may need additional items other than the obvious camera and lenses. Two essential items for studio photographers are backdrops and props to be used in different photo shoots. Whether you are shooting a family portrait or a fine-art image, chances are you will need one or both of these items at some point.

Instructions

  1. Backdrop

    • 1

Measure the space of the studio you need to cover with your backdrop. Add an extra foot to the height of the backdrop measurement. For example, if the space is 12 feet wide by 10 feet high, you will need fabric that is 12 feet wide by 11 feet high.

    • 2

Go to a local fabric store and look for material that matches the color and texture you want to use. Look in the sale or discontinued section as you can often find material here that is at a discounted price. Buy a 12-by-11-foot panel of fabric.

    • 3

Lay the fabric on the floor of your studio, and fold the top 1 foot of the height of the backdrop in half. Pin the fold in place and stitch the fold to create a loop in which a crossbar from your backdrop stand can be slid through to hold the fabric in place.

    Props

    • 4

Determine the type of prop you want to have in your photo shoot. You may want to re-create a lamp or some other type of object that is either too expensive or too rare to find for your shoot.

    • 5

Go to your local craft store and purchase a block or cylinder of plastic foam. Place the foam on a desk or work table when you get home and use a utility knife to shape the foam into the prop you want to use.

    • 6

Paint the foam either by brush or spray can to match the color of the object you want to use in the picture and paint in any details. Once the prop is completed and you are finished with it for your shoot, create a storage closet or space in your house to store props and other items you will use in your photography.
