How to Make Your Own Fabric Studio Backdrop

Fabric backdrops are a staple for studio photographers. Whether they are a standard single color or multi-toned backdrop, having one at your disposal can go a long way to giving your images the type of look you are trying to achieve. While you can buy fabric backdrops from a number of different photography retailers, you can also make them at home using material that will meet your requirements for color and size.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area in you studio you want the backdrop to cover. You may choose to have one solid color backdrop as you principal one that will cover the entire wall and then use smaller different colored backdrops when needed.

    • 2

Add an additional 6 inches to the vertical measurement, when measuring the area you want to cover.

    • 3

Look for sales or promotions on old or discontinued material at local fabric retailers. If the material that is on sale does not match the color you want exactly, remember you can always dye the material to get the exact color you are looking for. Purchase the material in the size you measured back at your studio.

    • 4

Lay the material you purchased on the floor in your studio. Fold the top 6 inches of the material in half to create a loop. Pin the fold to hold it in place and sew the fold to create the loop.

    • 5

Slide the cross bar from your backdrop stand through the loop and attach the cross bar to the vertical supports. Raise the vertical supports until they are in the correct position and your fabric background is ready to use.
