How to Make a Support for Backdrops

Professional studio backdrops are costly pieces of equipment that can deteriorate rapidly with improper use. In a pinch, some photographers will nail or tape their backdrops to a wall. Although this method can be effective, it can also tear your backdrops or leave unsightly marks on them. Using a backdrop support system can lengthen the life of your backdrops as well as give your studio a more professional appearance. You can attach a length of PVC to two photography light stands to quickly create a safe way to support your backdrops.

Things You'll Need

  • 8-foot PVC pipe, 2 inches wide
  • Tape measure
  • Drill
  • 3/4-inch drill bit
  • Two light stands
  • 6 A-clamps

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 1 inch from each end of the PVC pipe and place a small mark to note the location. Make sure the two marks are in a straight line from each other on opposite ends of the pipe. The marks should be facing the same direction. Use the drill and 3/4-inch drill bit to drill a hole through the pipe in the marked spots.

    • 2

Lay the PVC pipe on top of the two light stands by putting the threaded head of the light stands through the holes you just drilled. The standard size for these threads is 5/8 inch, so the PVC should slide snugly onto the poles with little room to move.

    • 3
A-clamp the muslin to the PVC for secure support.

Wrap the backdrop over the top and halfway around the pipe. Attach your backdrop across the PVC pole by securing it with an A-clamp. Working your way from one side of the stand to the other, wrap and clamp the backdrop to the pipe every 1 1/2 feet. Raise the light stands one at a time to the desired height before using your backdrop and support.
