How to Make Miniature Dollhouse Toys

Making miniature dollhouse toys is an artistic way to design your own play accessories. Dollhouse toys can sharply increase the price you pay for a standard doll and a model house. Constructing your own toys for the doll to "use" while she is home will save you the time and money of outright purchases. Incorporate several household items and the help of your kids for a family weekend activity.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut out cardboard shapes for making a three-dimensional doll-baby bed, stool or table. Cut out the shape of a miniature mattress, a head board, footboard and bed legs, for instance. Cut out a 1-by-4-inch rectangle for use as a full-length mirror, or trace and cut a 2-by-3-inch cardboard piece to roll into the shape of a drinking glass, for example. Exact sizes and shapes of your bed, table and other measurements will vary depending on the size of your doll and the dollhouse.

    • 2

Build your miniature toys. Fit the bed frame and mattress together into a three-dimensional shape, for example. Bond each piece together with permanent epoxy. Curve the long ends of the cardboard piece cut for the drinking glass together, for instance, to create the cylinder shape of the glass. Bond the sides together with permanent epoxy. Repeat for every toy for which you have pieces.

    • 3

Combine the water and flour into the pot to make a papier mache mix. Boil the mix for three minutes. Allow the mix a five-minute cooling period. Pour the mix into a medium-size bowl.

    • 4

Soak a newspaper strip into the mix. Press the strip around the body of the drinking glass, for instance. Continue until the surface of the drinking glass -- and all remaining toys -- is covered in one layer of newspaper papier mache.

    • 5

Soak a white paper towel strip into the mix. Press the strip around the body of the drinking glass, for example. Continue until the surface of the drinking glass -- and all remaining toys -- is covered in one layer of paper towel papier mache. Paper towel provides an ideal surface for acrylic paint. Allow four hours for the toys to dry.

    • 6

Coat each toy in acrylic paint. Allow two hours for the paint to dry before handling.
