How to Get a Seamless White Background for Product Photography

Product photography, as the name suggests, is studio photography of items that a company offers for sale. The pictures of these products may be used in marketing campaigns or in the company's product catalogs. Often, these pictures are taken against a white seamless background. A seamless background is one that is curved from a vertical to horizontal position, allowing for both the background and bottom to appear the same for positioning of the product. You can create a seamless background at home.

Things You'll Need

4 or 5 sheets of white Bristol board
Clear or transparent tape
Portable coat stand or backdrop stand
Hand clamps or duct tape

Instructions

  Buy four to five pieces of white Bristol board that will be used for the backdrop. Lay the Bristol board on the floor with each sheet overlapping each other by 2 inches. When all the sheets are laid out, use clear or transparent tape and run a strand of tape along where the Bristol board pieces meet each other; when done, flip the Bristol board over and tape the seams on the back of the Bristol board.

  Position a portable coat rack or backdrop stand in the room you will be using to shoot the product photography. Attach the Bristol board to the top crossbar with hand clamps or hold the Bristol board in place with a strip of duct tape.

  Place a table that will be large enough to support the product you will be photographing 1 foot in front of the backdrop. Lay the Bristol board onto the table and raise or lower the crossbar on the backdrop stand until there is enough Bristol board on the table to cover the table and to create a gentle curve in the board where it goes from the table to a vertical position. Your seamless background is ready to be used.
