How to Make a Snoot for Studio Flash

A "snoot" is long tubular shaped attachment that connects to a photography studio strobe that gradually narrows and is designed to direct light. Photography can be an expensive hobby and profession. You can easily spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on a number of accessories that are used. You can easily save yourself some money by making a snoot at home using black neoprene foam and black gaffer tape.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the diameter you want for the front of your snoot. If you want a snoot with a four-inch diameter you will need to cut the neoprene so the edge that will be the front of the snoot will be cut to about 12 to 14 inches in length.

    • 2

Cut the opposite side of the neoprene longer, so when the neoprene is wrapped it will form the cone shape that is needed for the snoot.

    • 3

Run a strip of black gaffer tape where the two edges of the neoprene meet. The finished product will be cone-shaped with the four-inch diameter opening at the front and the larger opening at the end that will be connected to the studio light.
