How to Hang a Back Drop

Backdrops are used in photography to set a specific scene or photograph appearance when taking a picture. Studios can have multiple backdrop styles for customers to choose from, including different sizes and colors. Hanging a backdrop is a moderately easy process if you have the correct tools and room space in your studio. However, backdrops can also tear easily when special care is not taken in the hanging process.

Instructions

    • 1

Construct a wooden frame for your backdrop. Lay the 1-by-3 lumber strips and 2-by-2 lumber strips on the studio floor. Saw the 1-by-3-inch wood to the width of your backdrop paper roll minus the width of each 2-by-2 lumber strip. Check your measurements using your tape measure to ensure your constructed frame is the exact width of your backdrop paper roll.

    • 2

Measure 3 to 4 inches in from each end of the two 2-by-2 lumber strips in your frame. Lay the 1-by-3 strips perpendicular to the 2-by-2 strips, forming the shape of a square. Screw in a steel T-bracket at each of the four corners of the square where the wood strips meet by using your screwdriver. Ensure the corners are square by measuring with your carpenter's square tool.

    • 3

Lean your wood frame against the wall of your studio. Position the roll of backdrop paper at the bottom of the frame. With the help of another person, carefully unroll the paper, pulling the top edge upward. Complete this task in a slow, controlled motion as to not rip the backdrop paper. Pull the paper evenly so it hangs evenly over your backdrop frame.

    • 4

Stretch the backdrop paper over the front of your frame and wrap it behind the frame's back. Clamp the upper corners of the paper and frame using your large binder clips. Clamp the sides of the paper and frame as well to ensure a snug fit.
