Good Camera Angles for Modeling Poses

Eye-Level

• Eye-level is one of the most common types of camera angles when photographing model headshots. The angle is very neutral, which makes it versatile for many types of models. As its name suggests, eye-level photographs are taken at eye level. The subjects appear just as they would if you were looking them in the eye. It is considered to be a very safe angle, so it may not be suitable for some types of modeling such as high-fashion shoots.

High Angle

• With the high angle, the photograph is taken at a slightly forward angle above the subject. The camera is not placed directly above the model, but looks downward from in front of the model. This type of angle is used on occasions in which the model is to appear smaller or diminished. The angle is also useful if the background is important and needs to be included in the photograph. High angles usually generate a wide viewing space, which makes it great to show an overview of scenery.

Low Angle

• Opposite of the high angle, the low-angle shot is taken from in front of the subject from below eye-level. The low angle is great for photo shoots that require the model to appear larger or taller than she is. The low angle tends to make models appear dominant and strong. They are typically used on photo shoots that require the model to portray power.

Bird's Eye

• The bird's-eye angle is taken from directly above the model and is excellent for taking photographs of models in a prone position. The bird's-eye angle can be tricky to accomplish as the results can sometimes be a bit disorientating if not done correctly. Generally, the model will be the only subject of a picture taken from a bird's-eye view. The fewer items seen in these types of photographs, the more appealing they will turn out.

Slanted

• The slanted angle is taken with the camera slightly turned to one direction. Typically the camera is held either perfectly horizontal or vertical. The slanted angle, however, allows a more creative feel for a photograph. They are most effective in situations where the model is posing in a dramatic fashion. The angle of the slant should complement the angles of the model's pose. The slanted angle is an excellent way to create lines and flow in modeling photography.
