How to Keep Newborns Happy During Photo Shoots

Photographing babies and infants can be challenging. You have to have props and positions for the infant that will be safe while allowing you to create pictures that the parents will want to buy. An unhappy or fussy infant can make the shoot even more difficult and can make everyone's stress level rise. To prevent this from happening, there are a few things you can do before the shoot.

Instructions

    • 1

Book the shoot for at least an hour to two hours after the baby normally wakes up from either a nap or in the morning. If you want a happy baby at the shoot, you will need to book around the baby's schedule. While a newborn's schedule will change, you should have a good idea when these times are during the day.

    • 2

Feed the newborn at least an hour before the shoot. This will give you a chance to feed the child and get him ready for the shoot. Try not to rush the feeding or getting dressed. Keep the routine as normal as possible.

    • 3

Comfort and soothe the child when you first get to the photographer's studio. The baby may be nervous or frightened by things in the studio. Take some extra time to show the infant the lights, camera and lenses. Allow the baby to look -- not touch.

    • 4

Relax yourself. Newborns and infants alike can feel when parents are stressed or worried and will react to it. If you are relaxed and maintain a fun atmosphere for the newborn, he will respond in the same way.
