How to Flatten Black and White Pictures That Have Curled

Over time, if old black and white photographs are not stored correctly the corners can begin to curl. If your black and white pictures with curling corners are the only copies that exist, you will want to flatten the pictures to return them to their original condition. Once you have flattened the pictures, consider having them professionally scanned. This will give you a digital file that you can have prints made from.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the black and white photo between two pieces of tissue paper. Lay the picture and tissue paper face down on an ironing board.

    • 2

Set the iron on its lowest setting. Run the iron over the picture and tissue paper from side to side. Use extreme care, and be sure to keep the iron moving. If the iron rests in one spot too long it could further damage the picture.

    • 3

Lift the back sheet of tissue paper off the picture and lift up the picture. Place the picture between two new sheets of tissue paper and place it between two large books. Run the hot water in the bathroom until the room is filled with steam. Place the books with the photos in the bathroom and leave them there overnight.

    • 4

Remove the picture from between the two books. To protect it from future damage, mount and frame the picture.
