How to Get a Portfolio for Modeling

To begin a career in modelling, you first need to show prospective modelling agencies a portfolio of your work and the different looks that you can carry. For a model who is just starting out, building a portfolio can be a time-consuming and expensive venture. There are ways to cut down on some of the costs, provided you can be flexible and work with photographers during their non-peak times.

Things You'll Need

  • Portfolio case

Instructions

    • 1

Contact photographers in your city who advertise that they work with new models. Tell these photographers that you are looking to build a portfolio. Established photographers may have a package for new models. New photographers who are just starting out themselves may offer you the shoot in exchange for you allowing them to use the images from the shoot as advertising.

    • 2

Contact makeup artists and hair stylists and see if they have similar packages or arrangements for new models. If there is a salon you have been going to for some time, you may be able to use them for your shoot.

    • 3

Meet with the photographer before the shoot and determine the number of shots and poses you want to have. Come to an agreement on the length of the shoot and when the shoot will take place.

    • 4

Select the wardrobe you want to wear for your shoot from you personal clothes, or approach a local retailer and see if they would be willing to lend you some clothes in exchange for prints from the shoot that they could use in their advertising.

    • 5

Arrive for the shoot and work through all the poses and wardrobe changes you have selected.

    • 6

Assemble your portfolio with images from the shoot and any tear-sheets you may have from past work. A tear-sheet is the actual page from the magazine, newspaper or advertisement that features your image. Write in the top right corner of the tear-sheet the date and the name of the publication that your image appeared in.

    • 7

Insert the images and tear-sheets into the protective sleeves in a portfolio case. Only include your best work, and put the strongest photograph at the front of the portfolio. You now have a portfolio that you can show to potential agencies and clients.
