How to Avoid Sun Glare When Taking Pictures

Sunlight can provide beautiful light for photographers at different times of the day. It also can create harsh light that photographers need to compensate for. With a little planning, and using some addition equipment on your camera, you can minimize the effect of the harsh sun and turn it into an advantage in your photography. While it is usually best to time a shooting to when the sun is softer, in some instances, like news photography, you do not control when you can shoot outdoors.

Attach a lens hood to the front of your camera. A lens hood is designed to prevent light from entering the lens from its sides, causing your picture to have a washed-out glare appearance.

Attach a circular polarizer filter to the front of your lens. This filter is specially designed to eliminate glare and reflection from glass, metal and water. When attached, you compose the picture to your liking, then rotate the outside ring of the filter. As you rotate the ring, you will see that any reflection or glare will start to disappear. When it is completely gone, the filter is set at its maximum effect. The filter will also increase the color in your images.

Use the fill flash setting on your camera. When the sun is directly overhead, it is at its worst. Shadows and glare appear everywhere. Attach an external flash to your camera, turn the flash on and set it to ``fill flash.`` Turn your camera on and set the exposure mode to ``shutter priority`` to set the shutter speed with the sync range for your camera, which is usually up to a maximum speed of 1/250th of a second. Reduce the exposure by a full stop and let the flash fill in the foreground. By underexposing the picture, the sky and surrounding area will become more saturated in color, reducing the glare normally found in these conditions.
