Instructions for the Hoya Closeup Filter

Lenses work with cameras in much the same way as eyeglasses work with the human eye. The lens alters the path of the light to the film or digital sensor, creating the desired optical effect. Macro lenses provide the ability to photograph subjects from up close, revealing fine detail. Macro lenses can prove expensive, so finding an alternative means of close-up photography can save you money. Close-up filters, such as those made by Hoya, allow you to photograph objects at a much shorter distance without the expense of a macro lens.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine your DSLR's lens diameter and use only the matching Hoya closeup filter. Hoya close-up filters run from 39 mm to 95 mm in diameter.

    • 2

Select the number of diopters of the filter you wish to use. The higher the number, the closer you may photograph the subject. Hoya close-up filters come in +1, +2, +3 and +4 diopters.

    • 3

Remove the lens cap from your camera and unscrew any filters installed on the lens.

    • 4

Place a Hoya close-up filter on the end of the lens and screw it in place by hand.

    • 5

Attach your camera to a tripod.

    • 6

Aim the camera at your subject and position the tripod until you have the desired portion of the subject in frame.

    • 7

Press the shutter button to photograph the image.

    • 8

Review the image and exchange the current close-up filter for a higher diopter filter for a closer image or a lower diopter filter for a less-close image.
