How to Do Alphabet Photography

Alphabet photography is the use of individual pictures that on their own look like a certain letter in the alphabet and when combined together form a word. A large tire standing by itself could be used for the letter "O." The trick to alphabet photography is to try and find as many of the individual letters in ordinary man-made or natural structures or shapes. When done correctly the finished picture can be very compelling.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the same focal length of lens each time you are going out to look for and eventually shoot letters you find in objects. Different lenses view the image in a slightly different manner. Using the same focal length will give you the same appearance in each letter.

    • 2

Shoot in the vertical position for each picture. If you are unable to shoot vertically, shoot the image loose enough that you will have enough room to crop to a vertical image in post production.

    • 3

Fill the viewfinder to the same point with the image as possible. You want each individual letter picture to appear the same. If, for example, your camera has nine point diamond focusing inside the viewfinder, you may want to use the top and bottom focusing points, when the camera is in the vertical position, for the top and bottom points of the letter. This will ensure each letter has the same proportions in each image.

    • 4

Set the lens aperture to f/5.6 for each image. This aperture setting will give you a good depth of field, making sure that the same amount of the letter is in focus in each picture.

    • 5

Write down the location for each letter you find. Go back to the locations at different times of the day and in different seasons. See how the light looks at these different times and take additional pictures.
