How to Apprentice as a Photographer

There are many ways you can study photography. You can take online courses, become self-taught, take traditional college or university classes. All of these methods will teach the theory behind photography. But once you have completed the courses, you may want to apprentice in your selected genre of photography before heading out on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an established photographer who will agree to take you on as an apprentice.

    • 2

Identify photographers in your geographic region who work in the genre of your choice and who are willing to take you on as an apprentice. If you study photography at a local college or high school, check with the program director or student guidance department who may have a list of photographers who have agreed to take apprentices on in the past.

    • 3

Meet with the professional photographer and determine the length of time the apprenticeship will last and determine the learning objectives for the apprenticeship. Have him write a job description for your position during your apprenticeship stage. Often, apprentices will assist the professional photographer as part of the agreement.

    • 4

Complete the work and studies as required by the apprenticeship agreement. Meet with the professional on a regular basis to review your work and complete any documentation required for your apprenticeship.
