How Do I Seal Photos So They Will Not Fade?

Over time photographs will begin to fade, whether they are printed on photographic paper in a darkroom or are digital ink-jet prints. Although deterioration is inevitable, you can, with care and proper maintenance, extend the life of your pictures. For a start, always use the inks and paper recommended by your printer manufacturer. You can also use a special spray that will help to block damaging UV rays.

Things You'll Need

  • Krylon protective spray
  • Newspapers or drop cloths

Instructions

    • 1

Print your digital pictures either at home or at a retailer. Allow the ink to dry thoroughly if printed at home or keep them in their packaging until you are ready to treat them.

    • 2

Lay newspaper or a drop-sheet onto your desk, table or floor where you will be using the spray. The area you are working in must be well ventilated.

    • 3

Lay your pictures out on the flat surface. Hold the can of protective spray approximately 1 foot from the picture and apply the spray in even strokes from side to side.

    • 4

Allow the coating to dry thoroughly as per the instructions on the can. When dry, place your photos in a frame. Your picture is now sealed and will be protected.
