How To Photograph An Ant's Head

Macro photography is the practice of photographing very small objects. Whether it is flowers, insects or other subjects, when done correctly the pictures can appear as abstract images or very detailed pictures. Photographing an ant's head requires some preparation and practice to get the best picture. You will need a solid tripod to help eliminate any camera shake or movement. Macro photography has a very small field of view, and any camera shake will cause the picture to appear blurry.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach your camera to a tripod and position the tripod over the subject or the area you will be photographing. Attach a 50-mm Macro lens to your camera or adjust the lens on your camera to the macro position. Other Macro lenses are available, but a 50-mm lens is a good starting focal length to work with.

Turn your camera on and turn the exposure mode dial to aperture priority. While you can shoot in any mode, ideally you will want to have control over the depth of field of your image. In aperture priority you set the lens opening and the camera will select the most appropriate shutter speed.

    • 3

Press the shutter release halfway down to pre-focus the camera on the subject. Keeping the ant in the same position may be challenging. You can try to place a blade of grass into the picture to hold the ant in position. Once the lens is pre-focused, switch the auto-focus off. This will prevent the lens from focusing again when you go to take the picture, allowing the camera to take the picture more quickly.

Press the shutter release all the way down to take the picture. Press the "Review" button on the back of the camera to review the image.
