How to Publish a Photo Essay

In the past, an aspiring photographer had to approach a major publishing company if he wanted to see a collection of his photos in print. This involved pitching the concept of the book, meeting with printing staff and typically paying a large sum to the company. Today the publishing process is open to all, from the casual family photographer to the seasoned pro. Many online publishing companies specialize in photo books, all of which provide a straightforward interface for their users.

Instructions

    • 1

Browse for an online publishing service. Common online publishers include Blurb, Lulu and MyPublisher.

    • 2

Review the pricing information among different publishing services. As of 2011, a 20-page standard hardcover book with landscape orientation starts for $19.95 at Blurb, $14.95 at Lulu and $28.95 at MyPublisher. Add extra pages for around $0.99 per page.

    • 3

Register with the publishing service. Once registered, you will be directed to a layout customization page or receive an email providing you with a link to a book-building software.

    • 4

Select your desired layout from the available options. Decide whether the pages will be full-bleed, with an image stretched over the entire page, or bordered. Choose the number of images you want on each page and how they will be arranged.

    • 5

Upload the photos that comprise your photo essay. Most publishing services require that images be a certain resolution, usually 300 dpi (dots per inch) to preserve image quality once printed. Ensure that your images meet this requirement to avoid complications during printing.

    • 6

Arrange your photos in the desired order using the service's software. A photo essay is typically arranged in such a way that a story is told or a point is made, so keep this in mind while ordering your images. Photos can be placed chronologically to illustrate a vacation, or arranged by subject matter to describe a theme or underlying message. At this stage you can also add an image to the front and back cover of your book.

    • 7

Add text to the pages of your book if desired. Most services will allow you free captions on each photo as well as an introduction or credits page. Use the service's software to select the desired font face, font color and font size.

    • 8

Save your book template and review it on your screen. Make any necessary adjustments before proceeding with confirmation and checkout.

    • 9

Select how many copies of the book you want and purchase them from the publishing service. Most services will print, bind and ship your book within a week or two.
