How to Convert Horizontal Scans to Vertical Scans

Scanners are used by photographers, designers and individuals when they need to take a document, print, slide or negative and turn it into a digital file. While scanners themselves are portable and moveable objects, the scanning sensor is not. The digital sensor is permanently set inside the scanner. You cannot change the orientation of the scanning sensor from horizontal to vertical. You can, however, change the properties of the scanned document to make it appear as vertical image.

Instructions

Turn on your home computer and your scanner. Start the scanning software and create a folder where you will store the image. Click "File" and select the set up options for the scanned image. You want the scanned image to be saved as a TIFF file from the scanner.

Lift the lid of the scanner, place the document as you normally would on the glass and press the start button. The device will scan the document and the scanned image will appear as a horizontal image in the preview screen as well as in the final scan.

Open a photo editing program that you typically use to edit pictures. Click "File" and select "Open" from the drop-down menu. Use your computer's cursor to navigate to the folder containing the scanned image. Highlight the file and click "Okay" to open the image.

Click "Image" in the navigation bar of the program and select "Rotate" from the drop-down menu. Rotate the image 180 degrees so it appears vertical. Click "File" and select "Save as." Select "JPEG" as the file type. Give the altered scanned image a new title or name and save it to your computer's hard drive.
