Things You'll Need
Instructions
Arrange the backdrop for the photo shoot. If you'll be shooting indoors, select a solid colored backdrop to add emphasis to the newborn. Colors like black, dark blue, hunter green or a warm white work well with most skin tones. If you're shooting outdoors, select a location that is shaded and neutrally colored, such as a richly greened meadow.
Place several blankets on the ground to protect and comfort the child. Add texture and interest to the shot by twisting the blanket into a circular wrap for the newborn to lie in. The color of your blankets should complement the backdrop material or the surrounding scenery. Add props to the scene, such as a toy or stuffed animal, if desired.
Lie a sleeping child on their stomach to achieve a serene, tranquil pose. Face the child's head toward the photographer for greater intimacy in the resulting picture.
Hold the newborn if you wish to be included in the photograph. Cradle him lovingly, look up at him with admiration and smile. If the child can sit up on his own, sit next to him and join in playing with a stuffed animal or favorite toy.
Encourage the photographer to experiment in their approach. While traditional portraits are always nice, a close-up of the newborn's small feet or hands can have significant emotional impact. For a close head and shoulders portrait, stand behind the photographer to focus the child's attention.
