How to Make a Color Developer

Color developer, also known as C-41 chemistry, is used to develop 35 mm color negative film. Most developers arrive in prepackaged kits that include the developer, usually in the form of a concentrated solution or powder, and blix, which is a film bleaching agent. These products are not ready to use straight out of the container and must be mixed with water to create a working solution. Once mixed, the chemicals can be stored and used at your convenience.

Things You'll Need

  • Safety goggles
  • Rubber gloves
  • C-41 developer
  • Lab stirring rod
  • 3 beakers, 1-liter (34 ounces) capacity
  • 3 graduated cylinders
  • 3 sealable plastic jugs, 1-liter capacity

Instructions

  1. Making the Developer Solution

    • 1

Determine how much developer solution you will be making. For most home processing ventures, 1 liter (34 ounces) of working solution should suffice.

    • 2

Refer to the dilution ratios for 1 liter of working solution. For your convenience, all manufacturers provide dilution instructions on the container.

    • 3

Measure out the correct amount of developer concentrate by pouring it into a graduated cylinder.

    • 4

Fill a beaker with the appropriate amount of water. While most working solutions can be mixed at room temperature, or roughly 68 degrees F, check the instructions on your container to be sure.

    • 5

Pour the developer concentrate into the beaker filled with water and stir until thoroughly mixed.

    • 6

Empty the beaker into a sealable plastic jug and screw on the cap.

    • 7

Write important details, such as the type of developer and the date it was mixed, on a piece of masking tape and place it on the container before using or storing it.

Making Blix A and Blix B

    • 8

Add the appropriate amount of Blix A to a clean graduated cylinder. Refer to the dilution instructions on the Blix container for exact amounts.

    • 9

Fill a clean beaker with the correct amount of water.

    • 10

Pour in the Blix A concentrate and mix thoroughly.

    • 11

Empty the beaker into a resealable plastic jug and label it "Blix A." Also include the mixing date.

    • 12

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for Blix B using a clean graduated cylinder and beaker.
