How to Find Where a Photo Came From

Digital technology has forever changed the way pictures are taken, stored, edited and shared. Digital pictures also contain a significant amount of data in their "EXIF" (Exchangeable Image File) section. Depending on the type of camera you are working with information about the camera, lens, exposure, ISO and other technical settings will be saved in this portion of the picture. If your picture was taken with a smart phone or other web enabled device, it is possible the location of the picture will also be recorded.

      Turn your home computer on and open the photo browser or organizer that you typically use to view your pictures.

      Connect your camera, cell phone to your computer, or remove the memory card and insert the card into the computers card reader. Wait a moment for your computer to acknowledge that the card has been inserted. Follow your photo organizer's prompts and download the picture to your home computer.

      Right click on any of the pictures that you have just downloaded, when they appear on your computer's monitor. From the menu that will appear when you right click select "Properties."

      Scroll through all the data contained in the image properties until you get to the "GPS" or "Location" fields. If the device you took the picture with is equipped the longitude and latitude co-ordinates it will appear in this field.
