How to Whiten Teeth With a Photo Program

In photos, people want their teeth to look as white as possible. With advanced photo editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS5 or the consumer version Photoshop Elements, you can whiten a subject's teeth using the "Smart Brush Tool." This tool makes it very easy to accomplish what can otherwise be tricky in other programs. This is particularly important for portrait or wedding photographers when they have a single image with a number of people whose teeth need to be whitened.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Adobe Photoshop CS5 or Photoshop Elements. CS5 is the full-featured professional version; Elements is a consumer version that costs much less but has many of the same tools as CS5.

    • 2

Click "File" and select "Open" from the drop-down menu. Navigate to the folder containing the image you want to edit. Highlight the image with your cursor and click "OK" in the lower right corner of the window. This brings up the image.

    • 3

Right-click on the "Smart Brush Tool" and select "Pearly Whites" from the menu options. Adjust the brush size, using the toolbar, to make it easier to work on the teeth in the image.

    • 4

Click "View" in the navigation bar and select "Actual Pixels" from the drop-down menu. This will increase the magnification of the picture to 100 percent. Position your cursor over the teeth you want to whiten and hold down the mouse button. The program will select and apply the whitening filter to the teeth. Repeat the process for any other people in the picture.

    • 5

Click "File." Select "Save as" to give a new name or title to the picture and save it on your hard drive.
