How to Set Up a Canon G9 Camera to Take Deer Pictures in the Dark

Released in 2007, the Canon G9 is a compact point-and-shoot digital camera. Built around a 12.1 megapixel digital sensor, the camera also features a 35 mm to 210 mm zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f2.8 that is useful in low light. The camera supports attaching an external flash unit and remote timer. While the flash is not required for taking pictures of deer at night, the timer is needed to set up an interval shooting sequence.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the Canon G9 to a camera bracket or tripod and position the camera along a known deer track or an area where deer are known to feed.

    • 2

Turn the camera on and press the "MF" button at the 12 o'clock position on the rear circular camera control. This will set the lens to manual focus. Set the zoom feature on the lens to its widest point and focus the lens 20 feet in front of the camera. This will be an estimation on where the deer will be. Using the lens at 35 mm will give you a better depth of field then using the lens in the telephoto position.

    • 3

Turn the exposure mode to "Manual" and set the shutter speed at 1/60th of a second and aperture to f5.6. Press the diagonal lightning bolt at the 3 o'clock position on the rear dial to engage the built-in flash or attach an external flash to the hot shoe on the top of the camera. Turn the flash on.

    • 4

Attach a Canon or third-party timer remote control to the G9, turn the timer on and create a shooting interval where the camera will take a picture every 15 minutes. Press the "Start/Stop" button on the camera just before you are about to leave for the night. Wait for 15 minutes to make sure the first picture fires. Return in the morning, remove the memory card from the Canon G9 and inspect your pictures.
